Oh lawdy entered a reddit thread about race. I did not leave disappointed…in that I was sufficiently horrified.
It’s funny how black people go on and on and on about “black pride” and how they’re “so proud to be black” and everyone freaking praises them, but if someone says even one thing about being proud to be white then everyone calls him a racist bastard.
The above quote just doesn’t get it. There is a level of misinformation amongst a lot of the reddit population and real world population that doesn’t understand why this is wrong. Its not a matter of “why do they have it and we don’t” its a matter of “we have it all the time but we don’t realize it but feel intimidated when someone else has it”. Its playground logic.
Same person goes on to say:
One might not be proud of being white per se, but they might be proud of their cultural heritage from a western European or other historically “white” nation. For example, I am proud of the German portion of my heritage. But if i were to claim to be proud of being German or even just say I’m German, people immediately imply or flat out say that I am a nazi or nazi sympathizer (and they have done so on several occasions). This would be like implying that all black people must support the Rwandan genocide. My point is that I am marginalized and berated for having pride in my cultural identity, simply because of the small group of people that others used to represent an entire culture. Not all white people are racist, to imply that one should not be allowed to have pride for being white because there are assholes like the KKK that have become the representative image of “white pride”, is racism in and of itself.
A white male is complaining about being marginalized. I’m not one to really be upfront about racist thought but this is a bit much. Not all white people are racist, that is true. But an embarrassing amount still are, without knowing it. This many years after the civil rights movement we should have made a lot more progress but, in fact, have reversed since the 80s.
And then some common sense, one of the least upvoted comments in the thread:
That’s sort of like asking why there’s no “white history month” - the answer to the latter is that the whole rest of the year is dedicated to white history, and the answer to the former is that the whole rest of society is dedicated to white pride.
Also, just FYI, “White Pride” is what all the white supremacist groups are always on about. You probably don’t want to associate yourself with them.
It goes on:
I’m fucking sick of the people who can’t take a joke, It doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, beige, yellow, or fucking green it’s a fucking joke, get your heads out of your asses and laugh.
There’s nothing better than dark humour, I enjoy these jokes, but people are sometimes real bitches.
I really hate this argument. Saying ‘It’s a joke!’ is NOT excuse for racially charged jokes. Some comedians do it well- but there is a difference. Comedians that tell well-made race jokes, in my opinion, state them for a reason- to subtlely confront people about it. Dave Chapelle made a lot of jokes and skits about race that were funny. But they were both funny and telling- he stopped making his joke when he felt white people were laughing at him rather than his jokes. They didn’t take in the message of his jokes, the teachings. Comedy has for centuries been used to present difficult-to-swallow ideas to an audience (like the court jester). Learn up, most race based jokes are mediocre and uphold stereotypes that are offending all around. No, you really are not that funny.
I think this next statement really points out the odd contrast between race jokes based off the Jewish, Asians and whatnot, and the jokes told about black people:
It’s a weird case. Being black myself I can take a few light hearted jabs, but often times black jokes tend to carry connotations that reflect negatively on black people’s personhood and morality. Stay with me here, I’m not saying that I think it’s any more or lest racist to tell jokes about other races, but the types of jokes carry a slightly different tone. Lets skip the political correctness and do a quick list of stereotypes (for North America at least)
Jews- stingy, big noses, at worst swindlers. none of these overtly scream subhuman or all around despised. Sure, money thievery is mentioned in extreme cases, but even this is seen as “too far, bro” by most people.
Asians- smart but socially awkward, overachievers love rice. again, none of these scream subhuman or morally reproachable.
Polish-…i don’t really know of any major ones, so I can’t play into a major stereotype
French- cowards. Sure, not a good trait to have, but cowardice does not equate to morally reproachable to a major degree.
now black people get- low intellect, cannot speak proper english, lazy, homophobic, smelly(?), and cop killing, woman raping, gang banging, hip hop worshiping, gold wearing hoodlums, also like watermelon and fried chicken with a jim crow like obsession, sustaining themselves off of foodstamps in low income neighborhoods while selling drugs and contaminating the rest of America.
I’m most definitely biased towards sterotypes agains blacks simply because I am black, I won’t deny it, but these sterotypes feed into the idea that blacks are in the most extreme case less than human (low intellect) and completely morally detestable. These are attacks on an entire races integrity, and tend to cut deeper than other attitude predispositions. What hurts worse, someone telling you you have a big nose, or someone telling you that you are an all around terrible person, if even a person at all?
edit: for blacks, I forgot big dicks. Yea, that sounds weird…but often this is grouped with low intellect and ape-like demeanor, playing into the whole “sub human” thing I was talking about
Its long but worth the read. That is a lot whats wrong with jokes about race. Admittedly ’French’ isn’t a race, and Polish isn’t either- those are more attacks on cultures, but it stands on itself.
