today was a cold and rainy day
at around 8:30pm, the rain had picked up and a strong wind blew over the strip mall-laden street my work place is at
at around 8:36 a young woman pulls up in an older model chevy suburban
she goes inside, i’m outside relining the outdoor trash bins with new bags
she comes back out and asks me, as the wind picks back up and blows rain onto both of us, if i could install a head light for her
normally i hate installing headlights. they are time consuming and there is little pay off. if its cold, raining and windy? i’m in an even less good mood to do it
but i take a look at it because, hey, she doesnt want to get pulled over and if it isn’t too difficult i wouldnt kill me to just install it
she pops open the hood and i look where the headlight is mounted. i tried anyway but it was a bit difficult seeing as there was a huge battery (mounted with rope! omg) right in my way.
i tell the woman, “hey i can’t install this headlight, this battery is in the way”
she responds, “can you just take the battery out?”
this is a common misconception about auto parts retailers: we are NOT a shop. we do not get paid commission. we do not make any extra money out of installing a headlight or battery. we do it as a courtesy to our customers and can refuse if we need to.
this lady wasn’t easy about it. she wanted me to take out the battery, install a new mount on the battery to get rid of the rope, install her headlight. it is, i remind you, still raining and fucking freezing.
in the end i told her no because I am not about to do a 25 minute job at night time with bad lighting, while its raining and the wind is blowing and its fucking freezing.
get the fuck out of here.
